Brian's parents have an apartment in Reno, NV, which is very close to Lake Tahoe, so while we were visiting we took the opportunity to get in some MUCH needed snowboarding. We spent 2.5 days on the mountains and despite the ridiculously warm weather it was really nice.
The first mountain we hit was Boreal. We had to get a late start so our options were somewhat limited. There are only a few ski resorts in the area that have night skiing during the week and Boreal seemed like the best option. There are only a few runs open and its not a super challenging mountain, but it was a good place to shake the rust off after not snowboarding for two years. We were able to catch a beautiful sunset from on top of the mountain and snowboarded until we got bored of the 2 or 3 runs we were doing. We were both pretty excited to be back out on the snow, so when we got home we prepared for the next day's trip and got a pretty good night sleep.
Wednesday, we went to Squaw Valley, a place I have been twice in the summer, but never had the opportunity to hit it in the winter. Its a beautiful ski resort with a really fun mountain. It kind of reminded me of Crystal Mountain in Washington. Squaw is pretty expensive to ski at, but they are super military friendly and Brian was able to score a FREE pass for the day! They also had a weekday special going on where if you fill up with gas at a Shell station you get a coupon for 2 passes for the price of one. As we were going in to get our lift tickets we were stopped by a man looking for someone to split the deal with him. We jumped on the opportunity for my lift ticket and I only ended up paying $45 (usually a $100 lift ticket) for my ticket! What an awesome day! We had an absolute blast snowboarding there. There were no lift lines and the runs were pretty long. My legs were always on fire by the time we hit the bottom of the runs. It was about 55 degrees and sunny, so we were pretty warm, but the snow wasn't too bad. It got a bit slushy a little later in the day, but whatever, we will take what we can get. This is definitely one of my favorite mountains to ride.
Thursday, we headed up to Mt. Rose after we got up and moving. A storm was coming in so it was REALLY windy and a bit chillier than the previous two days. The wind was so strong at the top of the mountain that we had some serious trouble traversing certain parts of the mountain. I had to pull the hood on my jacket super tight to protect my face because the blowing snow hurt so badly. There were a few major perks to being there in those conditions and they were no lift lines and cheap tickets. Apparently, Thursday is ladies day at Mt Rose, so my ticket was only $29 and Brian was able to get another military discount, paying $39. For once I actually got something cheaper than him! The snow was actually pretty good on the runs because there was no one up there and fresh snow was constantly being blown onto the runs. We only stayed on the front side of the mountain because everyone coming from the back side kept saying how icy and scary it was. I didn't need to find out for myself, although Brian did go over there once to find out. I ended up taking a pretty good fall and tweaking my ankle a bit, so our day ended a little early, but that's okay. We still had a blast and were happy to have a chance to snowboard.
I hope you enjoyed the pictures and videos of some of our runs! Shout out to GoPro!
