Christmas Road Trip: The Final Stretch

When we our friends' house in the morning we headed over to Joe and Anna's house to visit with them for a bit and see their new house.  After a couple of hours we were finally on our way back to yucky Oklahoma.  We planned to do the drive in 3 days, 6 hours each day.  We stopped just short of Birmingham the first night where Mikey woke up at 3 am with a high fever and croup.  He finally went back to sleep around 6...it was going to be a long day.

Though we were exhausted we decided to get up and go around 9.  After a few hours of driving and some strong coffee we made the decision to power through and get home.  Mikey had been battling a fever all day, wouldn't eat, and sounded horrible.  As the day wore on he looked worse and worse.  He also sounded worse and I decided that I wasn't comfortable putting him to be alone once we got home (we were due home around midnight).  About 4 hours outside of Lawton we stopped at an emergency room to get him a breathing treatment and some meds.

The first place we stopped was a tiny, stand alone ER where they gave him some ibuprofen for his fever and some oral steroids for his breathing.  He immediately threw up the oral steroids and the ER was not equipped to deal with pediatrics so they sent us 40 minutes down the road.  Thankfully, they had already passed on all of our information so we waited less than 10 minutes.  At the second ER Mikey received 2 breathing treatments, a steroid shot, and a prescription for some antibiotics and steroids.  We finally got back on the road again around 1:30 am.  We made it back to our house around 4:45 am...when we realized the door from the garage to the house was locked and we didn't have our keys.  We gave our friends who were watching our house a nice O'dark-thirty phone call so we could go get our keys and go to sleep!  We are very appreciative that they got our mail, watched our house, and weren't pissed when we called at 4:45!

Finally, around 5 am we crawled into bed and slept...for 3 hours...because Mikey woke up at 8...YAY!  I got up with Mikey since Brian did 99% of the driving.  He relieved me a few hours later and I got to nap for about 3 hours.  A few hours later he took a nice nap...we basically tag teamed all day.

Our vacation was absolutely amazing, but I think we need a vacation to recover from it.  I feel like we have been going nonstop for the past 3 weeks.  Hopefully we can find some time to recover in the next couple weeks as Brian prepares to take command and I prepare to start class and take on the FRG!
